Photography in 100 Words by David Clark

30 Mar

Photography in 100 WordsPhotography in 100 Words is a charming collection of outstanding photographs. Fifty fantastic pieces of art by fifty different photographers. Each spread has one of the artist’s pieces on the right and a write up on the left.

Imagine getting into an elevator, right behind you follows a famous professional photographer who happens to have one piece you absolutely love. A conversation then follows about that piece, then the elevator reaches the floor and the two of you part ways.

This book will take you on that elevator ride with 50 photographers.

I’m not sure how if it was David Clark or the Focal Press team who is responsible for the layout of this book, but they deserve to be recognized for their work. It’s clean, it flows, it is sharp. I question the shrink wrapped decision but the book being a short read may have something to do with it.

Who is this book for? After reading through it, I’d say it will make a nice coffee table book in a studio. Certainly one I am proud to have in my collection.

I wouldn’t call this suggestion a critique, and barely a suggestion at that. More of a curiosity of how this book would have been if, instead of one picture and one short write up, we would have had a series of four or five photographs. Certainly not 50 different photographers in this case, but it probably would have drawn me in to a more personable connection, and not the elevator encounter.

Monkey Butler Ninja gives Photography in 100 Words 4 ninja stars out of 5.

Review: Battlestar Galactica Season 1

22 Apr

So, two of my friends, neither of which know each other and they are vastly different people, have highly recommended Battlestar Galactica to me. Stuff like, ‘I can’t believe YOU have not seen it’ and ‘Trust me, go watch it’ were said repeatedly. Well, I finally netflix’d Season: 01. And all I have to say really is…

WOW. They were right.

If you enjoy Sci-Fi, Firefly, Star Wars, or any kind of adventure that is well told… you are going exceedingly enjoy BSG. I am pumped to start season 02 as soon as possible! Only one or two of the episodes in season 01 were meh. BUT sooo many of them were OMG amazing.

For those who are curious, there is 3hrs of miniseries to watch before season 01 (It is Disc one of the DVD set). This is a really good test to see if you are interested in BSG. The cinematic style of the miniseries was stunning. Whoever was the director of photography on set knew his/her stuff many of the shots were admirably composed. In my humble opinion, this simmers down after the miniseries when the regular ‘season’ starts. It’s still good, just not fantastic.

My ONLY grips are the following:
1. The bumpers: I don’t like how part of it is a preview to the show… I’m the type of guy that can guess a lot of what will happen in a preview.
2. The bumper also doesn’t do the show justice! The show is amazing and the bumper is subpar.
3. The camera movement style when in space (DURING NON COMBAT SCENES) is a clear rip off Firefly, with the exception that Firefly did it perfect.

That all being said, the stuff that BSG does right frakin blow the cons out of the water.

The acting is VERY good. In particular the women are delivering an excellent performance. Mary McDonnell and Katee Sackhoff blow me away. Katee is playing the tomboy tuff guy err girl, that so many movies and TV shows ruin. Most of the time this type of character is horribly written and the acting performances are even worse. This is not the case with Katee, bravo. Mary McDonnell, this woman knows how to carry a presence of well balanced power and wisdom. The stunning Tricia Helfer is a pleasure to watch and she is doing wonders with her character. The men do well also. Dr. Gaius, James Callis’ character has nice depth and complexity which he delivers wonderfully. Edward James Olmos should be mentioned as well. His performance as Admiral Adama displays a calm power, a prescience that demands respect, and makes me believe that he is the man in charge. Bravo to you actors and actresses.

The plot is solid. And unlike some shows I am watching now (cough *HEROES* COUGH) it has DIRECTION! I feel like the story is building and going towards a common ending point. I want to know how it ends but I am more focused on the journey that the story will take me on! What will happen to the characters! Ok, I am off to another episode. Season 02 starts now!

Good Hunting.

Watchmen: Movie Review

09 Mar

Last year when I saw the preview for Iron Man had a release that was extremely entertaining. Watchmen, however was a step backward for comic book movies.

What did it do right?

The visual effects were fair. Wasn’t like prequel Star Wars movie where the special effects are replacing plot and dialog. However, I was more impressed by the special effects in the preview shown before the movie, Terminator Salvation.

Multiple characters were developed nicely.

Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach was awesome. Period. I have a strong feeling we will see a lot of stellar performances from that guy in the future.

What did it do wrong?

Too many characters that I didn’t care about. It certainly appears as a superhero movie, yet only one had ‘superhero’ ability, and MAYBE another had some super speed/intelligence. The other 36 heroes were guys/gals in ridiculous outfits.

These ‘superheroes’ just kicked the $h*% out of everyday people. Wow… seriously? That is like training 101 for my Monkey Butler Ninja Army.

Way too long. 2hr 43min. I really was disappointed with the editing in this movie. I think it could have easily been trimmed to 2hrs and a skilled editor could have maybe brought it to 1hr 45min.

Excessive pointless plots. Without going into spoilers there were a couple story lines that were filler space in a movie that was already 2 dog years long.

Too many penises. Seriously, having a big blue wang on the screen is a bit distracting when I’m listening to a sub plot that I don’t care about.

The overall plot was a bit weak. At first I liked the twist, but now that I have thought about it, there were a ton of other solutions that could have been thought of.

Summary:

While movies like Iron Man and The Dark Knight propel comic book movies up the production food chain, this “C” movie set comic book / graphic novel movies back a couple steps. Bad editing, bad choice of music for scenes and not the greatest directing from Zack Snyder crippled this movie. I feel bad for those who were fans of the graphic novel as I am 110% sure that it was better by far.

Don’t watch Watchmen.

Monkey Butler Ninja gives Watchmen 2 ninja stars (but one isn’t really that sharp)

The Simpsons Season 20: Episode 11 How the Test Was Won

06 Mar

It was a ruff week, so having a Simpsons episode on the DVR was a delight. Episode 11 was easily one of the best episodes in a long time! Found myself laughing out loud quite a few times. The humor was on multiple levels as well, the usual slapstick stuff but also some poking fun at standardized tests and how the schools actually give them. In the end… A+

Also on a side note, I really dig the new intro.

Watch this episode below now!!

Helvetica : Movie Review

27 Feb

Ok, time to switch pace and retreat from Oscar nominated movies.

Today I review the documentary movie Helvetica. This film is literally about a single typeface, a specific font family, Helvetica. Sound boring? You bet it is! This is of course assuming you are not a graphic designer of any kind. Assuming you have never flipped through 100 fonts trying to figure out which one gets your message across.

On the flipside, if you deal with graphics in any way, if you ever did a layout for a poster, if you value the appearance of what you produce. Then this movie is worth 80 minutes of your time.

Make no mistake about it; there are people who care passionately about typography. The interviewees are uber geeks that are certainly the offspring of mutant nerds and influential graphic designers. Throughout the film approximately a dozen typographers and designers speak on camera. This is not a job to these people; it literally is their life’s fascination.

Helvetica takes you on an interesting path. In the first act, the history is presented and quickly followed with huge praises. Helvetica was viewed, and still is by many, as the perfect font. To these experts Helvetica cannot be improved. The film takes a sharp turn in what would be act two and presents the opposing sides view. This group of elite designers has an intense hatred the font family Helvetica. Describing it as dull, boring and most of all, overused. Personally, I wish other documentaries were as decent in presenting two sides of an argument, albeit font is a little less sensitive than the war in Iraq (which the war is blamed on Helvetica in this movie, seriously).

The editing and production of Helvetica is pretty darn good. Use of B-roll, pacing, and overall presentation held my interest. I am a graphic artist and know one of my weaknesses is typography, after watching this film… I feel much more informed.

Monkey Butler Ninja gives Helvetica three ninja stars and if you are a graphic artist, put in couple chocolate covered bananas!

Slumdog Millionaire : Movie Review

20 Feb

My wife and I are on our Valentine’s Day date, and we decide to go see a movie. It’s nearing Oscar time and honestly, a lot of films are nominated that we have not seen. Originally targeting The Wrestler (reviewed here) we had to make an adjustment as we were not willing to wait for the next screening.

An alternative choice was Slumdog Millionaire. I do not recall seeing a single preview for this movie but had heard TONS of buzz circulating around it in the Golden Globes (won: Best Director / Best Motion Picture / Best Original Score / Best Screenplay) and the Screen Actors Guild awards (Outstanding Peformance by a Cast in a Motion Picture).

Roll the dice, and every now and again, they come up 7.

What a pleasant surprise! Besides the entire buzz, my perception of this film’s storyline was about a boy that goes on a TV show to get a girl to fall in love with him, or a heavy documentary style/political movie. WRONG.

The story takes us on a three part journey in the protagonist’s life; childhood, adolescence, and the early stages of adulthood. Our protagonist is Jamal Malik, played by Dev Patel is a person who has had everything constantly stripped away from him in life. During this film, I found myself constantly thinking, how a human could endure such an impossible life. Passion push Jamal and his brother through life… fame, money, power, and love.

What would happen if you let some of those things control your life?

Through wonderful editing, this story keeps an excellent pace and gives you information as you need it. I would not be surprised in the least if this film took the Oscar.

For cinematography, this film absolutely deserves the nominations. Instantly, I was teleported into the slums of India. This feeling was maintained throughout the film, through the character’s aging and changes in location, I never left. However, my prediction is The Dark Knight taking best Cinematography

Congratulations to Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan for putting together a stellar film. The performances were able to extract from the entire cast is worth the nomination alone. It will give the other films a run for their money!

I highly recommend this film. I rate Slumdog Millionaire 4.5 out of 5 ninja stars!

The Wrestler : Movie Review

19 Feb

The Wrestler, staring Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke

This movie is a drama based on Randy “The Ram” Robinson, a wrestler that is well past his prime and having to face that fact.

The Wrestler creates a world that I had not imagined. What happens to a ‘pro’ wrestler after the lights have cooled, after the crowds have gone home… after the adrenalin fades? When you chose a profession or a passion that abandons your family, destroys your body, and engulfs you with pain… your life will be hard… and short.

Looking back at the movie… it is about a retired wrestler that is in love with a stripper, wants to reconnect with his abandoned daughter, and struggling to find life outside of the ring. Boring. Cliché in the strongest definition of the word.

Marisa Tomei plays the stripper and does a decent job… Oscar nomination worthy? No. Dynamite body? YES! Congrats on keeping in such great shape Mrs. Tomei!

Mickey Rourke playing Randy “the Ram” does derive an Oscar nomination however. I’ve never been a huge fan but respect his work in this film. Honestly, his performance is the only reason to RENT this movie.

Character’s relationships to each other were sub par at best. The development with his daughter seemed choppy and extremely unrealistic. Mickey made me believe his character was in love with Marisa’s character, but other than that, nothing worth mentioning.

If you are a fan of wrestling, maybe it’s for you… if you are thinking about becoming one… this movie is for you. However if you don’t fit either of those descriptions you can skip this movie.

I rate The Wrestler 1.5 out of 5 ninja stars!

Book Review: The Digital Photography Book

The Step-By-Step Secrets for How to Make Your Photos Look Like the Pros. by Scott Kelby

Let me start by saying I was first introduced to Scott Kelby via the Photoshop TV videocast. A free educational show put out to help people learn the awesomeness that is Photoshop. He has my complete respect for that.

This book however, is not fantastic. The target audience is rather inconsonant. It’s clearly not targeted for Pro’s. The book muddles between extreme beginners and avid hobbyist without direction. Towards the beginning, Scott Kelby mentions the book is written as if you and he were out on a photo shoot, but the book starts off with a very, “I’m better than you…” (he is) “and you need to do this!” But often leaves out the explanation of why.

I enjoyed Scott Kelby on Photoshop TV but his humor style is better fit for TV because it was weak banana sauce on paper. The sections are like small magazine “tip” articles so when half of it is bad humor there is little room for teaching.

The beginning of the book goes over all the expensive equipment you have to buy to look like a pro. Now personally I am just getting into still photography but have been dealing with video for years. So I’ve had it dug pretty deep into my monkey brain that content is king and you don’t always need an expensive ball head for your tripod to capture good content. The section felt like if I did not have this equipment, I would never be a Pro… while that may be true (I certainly LOVE my video tripod) I think this could be re-written to come across in a more ‘buddy on a photo shoot’ kinda way. On a positive note, the equipment is recommended in a three tier bracket, low-, med-, high-end budgets.

On to the bulk of the content. Chapters 2-6 are How to Shoot (insert topic) Like a Pro.

Then each page is generally a tip on the subject. There is some good tips in here and I would say the book starts to pick up a bit of steam. I’m the kind of monkey that if I spend a few hours reading a book and get ONE tip, method, or even a keyboard short cut out of it that I use a few times a day… it was worth it. What I don’t like is the titles… how to shoot like a pro. If it was titled something along the generic lines of ‘quick tips on better photography’ or ‘don’t suck so bad when shooting flowers’ I would be way cool with this book.

How to shoot Sports Like a Pro should be titled, skip this section because you cannot afford it. The first quarter of this chapter talks about how expensive the equipment is you need. Simply put, this is the worst section of the book. Summary: If you bought this $20 book, you are going to be shooting sports, it’s too expensive. Be where the action is (wow, thanks for that one, here is a banana) and use a monopod, for motion use the pan method taught in the wedding dance section (imagine if he would have taught us why instead of tell us what to do… we could have actually applied that knowledge in the sports scene).

Chapter 9 is on Taking Travel & City Life Shots Like a Pro… to me this is the best chapter in the book. Good tips and the content can hold its own. Tips on what to do when a location has been shot a million times before you got there and focusing on detail rather than everything in your eye’s view are a couple of good pages.

Summary

Chapters 1-6 did have a few tips that I will use, so it wasn’t a complete waste of time. It felt like so much was left out and the glimpses of good content left me to wonder if Scott Kelby needs to hire a different editor or perhaps focus on less subject matters and put more detail in. This book feels like a collection of magazine articles, which are fine as quick broad tips but not as a book. Using the word “Pro” so loosely in this book is an epic FAIL to me, you will not read this book and shoot like a pro… you will have tips to improve your photography but hold off on that Sports Illustrated Photography resume, read another book. It retails for $20 which isn’t going to break the bank but I’d look at other options. For example Digital Photography Techniques – Autumn 2008 covers 90% of whats in this book, and has some content that Scott does not cover.

I rate it: 2 out of 5 ninja stars (but not tact sharp stars)

Book Review: Adobe Flash CS3 Professional on Demand

01 Dec

by Andy Anderson, Steve Johnson, Perspection, Inc.

First of all I LOVE how this book is formatted. It says in the very beginning it is a ‘visual quick reference book’ and that is about as accurate as my ninja throwing star ability. It also says in the same paragraph that it covers ‘basic to advanced Flash skills.’ While this book will teach you a few things that would be considered ‘advanced’ Flash is too powerful of a tool to cover baby monkey’s to full blown ninja masters.

For fellow monkey’s that are considered beyond beginner the first half of this book will be fairly review. You probably will pick up some very helpful hints in the later half and that will be worth the read.

Again I want to praise the layout. Fantastic job! Highly recommend it for people who consider themselves a beginner or lower intermediately skilled.

I rate it: 4 out of 5 ninja stars and a bunch of bananas.

Book Review: Adobe Photoshop CS3 one-on-one by DEKE McClelland

25 Nov

First review is of Adobe Photoshop CS3 one-on-one by DEKE McClelland.

DEKE comes across as a real person who knows Photoshop like the back of his hand. What makes this book exceptional is that not only does DEKE have the ninja skills using the software but his ability to teach is equally ninja like.

In my opinion this book is for beginners to moderate Photoshop users. Look, I’m a full blown Photoshop Monkey Ninja and I learned new tricks going through this book. Pick it up!

As a side note. Since starting reading this book, I have NOT been attacked by either Lions or Hippos…. this book does not guarantee that you will have the same powers, but I’m just saying.

I rate it: 4 out of 5 ninja stars and two bananas.
